The Exploited Live in SA

Monday, June 30th, 2008

This passed saturday The Exploited played live in Johannesburg. They have been playing punk rock since 1980 and I wasn’t even alive then. The singer honestly had the most stage energy I have ever seen in my life. The show got completely out of hand and I saw people actually getting trampled. I was pretty scared so I just hung out in the backstage and watched the show from a safe place. It was really complete chaos as my buddy, Tyrone, explains.

It was good though and I got some pretty cool photographs. You can see in the third one how much spit and sweat was flying around. I buried myself in my hoodie and am taking my camera to Nikon right now for a clean up.

Thanks so much to Nick from Punk Safari for bringing out bands and supporting the scene here so much.

Bloodline Live at Bassline

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Bloodline Ltd was another opening band before Exploited and these guys always get the crowd rattled up. The energy of the guys is something to appreciate even if you aren’t into the hardcore scene. Check these guys out especially live.

Snake

Monday, June 30th, 2008

On our way to the parking lot after the aKing studio session, we ended up waiting in the loading zone for quite a while before a guard finally came to open up for us. I shot this photo of Jaco, the drummer, and think it came out super cool. I had seen a portrait of someone quite a long time ago where the guy threw his entire white balance off on purpose and I really liked the feeling of it. Obviously this won’t always work, and it won’t work for everyone, but standing in the cold concrete loading zone reminded me of it so I tried to do a similar thing.

aKing Live on 5

Monday, June 30th, 2008

aKing is one of my favourite bands of late and their album has been killed in my cd player since it’s release. There is just something about them that I really like and I think I really relate to their style of music. It’s always super crowded at their shows so when I found out they were playing the live at 5 in studio this weekend I had to make a plan. The boss hooked it up for me as he was doing the mixing for the live feed. Anyway, as always, I had a good time and even though the lighting is always terrible, I shot a few photographs. These two are of Laudo, the frontman. His presence is super and really different to most other bands. He doesn’t run around going crazy but concentrates on making good music. If you haven’t listened to them yet, make a plan.laudo liebenberg from aking playing guitar in studio photographed by marcus maschwitzlaudo liebenberg is the frontman for aking photographed by marcus maschwitz

Funny Guy

Friday, June 27th, 2008

I shot photographs for a nursery school and after dealing with about 88 young children, I realized that I better think SUPER carefully before we decide to take that step and plan having children. Honestly, it was absolute choas and some of the children even made it a nightmare. Haha.

In saying this, some of them were super cool to work with. I was backing up the images now and saw this one that I shot while setting up. I really like it just cause the little guy seems so confused. Funny. I really wish I could post more of the images because some of them are amazing but I really worry about the weirdos out there so I would rather keep the images between the parents and myself.

Hope you well and have a good weekend. Marcuschild portrait photographed by marcus maschwitz

Zebra and Giraffe in One Small Seed

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

My buddie Greg, from Zebra and Giraffe, mailed me last night to show me the article that is being run in One Small Seed. I shot the photographs that are being run in the article and they really came out super. One Small Seed is an amazing magazine and totally worth getting. This is the second article I have contributed to and I really excited to do more for them.

Also, make sure to check out Zebra and Giraffe. I have been popping into their practice sessions and cannot wait to see them play live soon.greg carlin from zebra and giraffe in one small seed magazine photographed by marcus maschwitzzebra and giraffe feature in one small seed magazine photographed by marcus maschwitz

Green Leaves

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

On my way to the office this morning I noticed the sun throwing back light on one of our plants. I thought it looked cool so I quickly shot a few photographs. What a cool start to the day. Hope you have a good one. Johannesburg Skyline

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

I shot this skyline of Johannesburg the other day from the rooftop of my friends building during sunset. I was busy with a shoot and saw this and ran up to catch a shot. The sun goes down super quickly in winter though.
